Cairde Le Cheile is exactly what it is, "Friends Together". But
it is Friends Together with a purpose. A group of people, organisations
and statutory bodies came together with the aim of supplying sporting, social
and cultural facilities for people with disability, be it physical or intellectual.
Representatives of People with Disability Ireland, Donegal Sports Partnership,
Special Olympics, Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Town Council, Health
Service Executive North West, and last but not least, Letterkenny Hospital's
Sports and Social Club came together and formed a company, Cairde Le Cheile
Ltd.
The company has acquired the old
St Conals Chapel
which is a landmark
building situated in Letterkenny Town Park, but which is in a poor state
of repair. The building was on lease from the Health Board to Letterkenny
Town Council. Both the Council and the Health Board have transferred their
interest to Cairde le Cheile.
The company have drawn up plans and have planning permission to turn the chapel into a
purpose built, state of the art centre for people with special needs. This is a unique
project, not just in this area, but in the whole of Ireland, as there are no comparable
projects anywhere in the country. Once again Donegal people are leading the way.
The centre will have a sports hall, gymnasium, hydrotherapy pool, social area, changing
rooms and toilet facilities. There will also be a coffee shop which will be open to the
public and patrons of the park. The centre will also provide employment for people with
disabilities.
The project, when completed, will have cost in the region of €2.5/3 million.
We would ask you to support any fundraising events in aid of this
worthy project.
